Joy and Nomi took the plunge and signed up for their first 10km running race ever in May 2010 in Singapore at the Sundown Race event...Then they trained for a half marathon in the fall of 2010, Joy's in Canada and Nomi's in Malaysia...Then, they finished their second-ever half marathon in Singapore May 2011 at the Sundown Race event, but this time they ran together!

Then their sporting paths diverged: Nomi went on to run marathons while Joy learned how to ride a bike. This blog charts their progress from 2010 to 2012.

Making Do with a Broken Toe

Joy here...Okay, so last week I ended up fracturing my little toe (not the cleverest thing I've ever done).  And while I'm supposed to be training for my upcoming 1/2 marathon (which is 55 days away), I've been wary of running with a fractured toe.  I mean, it's not hurting too much any more, and most of the swelling has gone down, but I don't want to extend the healing process and end up ruining not just my 1/2 marathon aims, but my full marathon aims (I'm shooting for an October 7, 2012 full marathon).  So that means that I've chosen to ride my bike this last week as a substitute for running.

So for the week of my little, fractured tiny toe, I rode a total of 6 hours on the bike:
Sunday - 140 minutes (outside up to Pink Lake)
Monday - REST
Tuesday - 60 minutes (inside on my bike on the trainer)
Wednesday - 55 minutes (inside on my spin bike)
Thursday - 55 minutes (inside at my spinning class)
Friday - REST
Saturday - 45 minutes (inside at a spinning class fundraiser)

None of those rides was particularly long or particularly hard, and while I'm hoping to ramp up my cycling this week and layer in some running, I really hope that I haven't compromised my training too much.  You see, I'm trying very hard not to be worried about my training and not to be too negative about what's happened with my little toe and how I'm now off track and all that.

What I've learned lately in life is that sometimes you just have to "go with the flow," which is something I'm not all that used to doing, but this little experience is forcing me out of my comfort zone and forcing me to just deal with the fact that I can't control all the variables in life, in training, or anything else.

So I'm just making do with a broken toe and learning how to go with the flow!

Over and out,
Joy
